The project proposal is especially focused on developing new synergies between Romania and Moldova by joining the force of two representative universities in developing high-quality research in one of the most challenging topics of tissue engineering, meaning hard tissue engineering. The importance of the topic is based on the very high need for bone-related materials (49% of the total market of grafting materials being represented by bone grafts) and, unfortunately, there are some diseases (osteosarcoma, infections, cancer) along with accidents that make necessary to develop more and more complex systems. Based on the existent, complementary experience of the UNSTPB (in the field of developing and morpho-structural, thermal characterisation of these materials) and USMF (especially in vitro and in vivo evaluation), the consortium will be able to develop complex and complete research. The materials will be designed with incremental complexity depending on the medical needs, from pure regenerative to enhanced regenerative (such for instance in the case of elderly people/people with osteoporosis) and up to complex drug delivery systems for the treatment of infections or cancer. The collaboration started before the bilateral project within an AUF program (with a 2-month internship of Mariana Jian within UNSTPB) and will continue within other bilateral projects of other funds being of mutual interest.

Stage 1:
The development of composite materials based on collagen and hydroxyapatite
Results
Submission of at least one review paper (D1.1);
participation in at least one international conference (D1.3);
Stage 2:
Development of systems with controlled release based on collagen, hydroxyapatite and mesoporous silica
Results
Development of at least 4 experimental models of mesoporous materials (D1.2 from the proposal) and composites (D2.2 from the proposal) The development of at least 3 porous materials loaded with antimicrobial, antitumor or just improved regeneration properties (D2.1 + D2.3)
